How To Get Off The Sugar Roller Coaster


Do you ever feel like sugar has some kind of power over you? Like you lose all sense of what's right or wrong and find yourself digging into the next donut? Well, I’ve been there and the struggle is real!

I’m not talking about sugars that naturally occur in foods such as grains, beans, vegetables and fruit. When in natural unprocessed form, sugar contains a variety of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and proteins. When we eat an apple, it is chewed and digested, its release into the body is slow and steady, allowing your body to absorb all the good stuff... no spikes or slumps.

Refined table sugar, also known as sucrose, is entirely different. It is extracted from either sugar cane or beets, and is pretty much empty as it lacks in vitamins, minerals and fiber, and thus requires extra effort from the body to digest. It causes our blood sugar to raise very quickly, then it drops just as fast causing us to feel irritated, moody and fatigued. This is what makes it feel like a roller coaster, and why we just want to grab the next sugary food... it's a vicious cycle!

When I was completely addicted to sugar, I was drinking Starbucks lattes every day and eating chocolate all the time. I was exhausted and didn’t know what to do! I didn’t know what foods to eat. Well, my own journey was long and involved a lot of learning and experience. Today, I can help you through this process of understanding and eliminating those foods that make us feel that way.

Here are the top five ways to ditch the sugar addiction and move on!

1. Drink lots of water. Sometimes sweet cravings are a sign of dehydration. Before you go for the sugar, have a glass of water and wait a few minutes to see what happens. Soft drinks are now America’s number one source of added sugar, instead of soda have infused water or herbal tea.

2. Become a label detective. Sugar lurks in everything from savory to sweet and in crazy amounts. Start reading labels and note that every 4 grams = 1 teaspoon. Next time you grab any processed food look at the sugar content and know how much sugar you are getting in your system. Swap it out for whole grains, fruit or nuts.

3. Eat more protein. Protein-rich foods like meat, nuts, and beans provide a steady and balanced source of energy for your body, which can help eliminate cravings for empty sweets. Whole grains have a good content of protein as well. Start your day with a protein-rich breakfast packed with eggs, whole grains and nuts rather than a sugar ladened cereal or white toast. During the afternoon, instead of giving into the 3PM slump, reach for a protein shake (you can always add raw cacao powder to make an awesome chocolate shake), a handful of almonds with a piece of fruit or a cup of yogurt with a drizzle of maple syrup.

4. Get physically active. Start with a simple activity like walking or yoga, starting with just 10 minutes a day and gradually increasing it. Being active helps balance blood sugar levels, boosts energy, release endorphins and reduces tension which will eliminate the need to grab the next sugary treat!

5. Make real food desserts. Just because we are cutting out sugar doesn't mean that we cannot have desserts... Desserts are absolutely on the table! Using the finest real food ingredients you can make the most delicious satisfying desserts.
