Unicorn Dreaming


Have you seen the new Starbucks Unicorn Frappe?! I must say she’s a beauty! The colors and even the name... beautifully done!

Personally, I’m a sucker for anything pink. And who doesn’t love unicorns, right?! However, if we do just a little digging, you will be shocked by the amount of SUGAR in just this one drink!!!

Most of us love Starbucks, I get it because I do too! I was also once addicted to their fancy drinks. When I was in college, I used to grab a DAILY Brownie Frappe like it was nothing, and of course I added whipped cream to it because why not! I enjoyed every sip of it BUT... I also gained 15 pounds in just one semester, not fun!

One fancy Starbucks drink can put a huge dent in your daily sugar intake, and on the long run contribute to your muffin top... The World Heath Organization (WHO) recommends limiting added sugar “roughly 25 grams (6 teaspoons) per day... WHO guidelines do not refer to the sugars in fresh fruits and vegetables, and sugars naturally present in milk, because there is no reported evidence of adverse effects of consuming these sugars.” Instead, the guidelines refer to sugars added to our foods, even to foods we think of as healthy or those we don’t think of as sweet. BUT According to Starbucks’s website, their newest Unicorn Drink (Grande) has 59 grams of sugar, keep in mind that every 4 grams = 1 teaspoon, that is about 15 teaspoon of sugar which is about 1/3 cup of pure sugar in ONE drink... can you image consuming that much sugar? (2)

And it’s not just this one drink or Starbucks specialty coffees that have these crazy amounts of sugar... added sugar exists in most processed foods and drinks! That’s why it’s super important to be a food detective and know exactly what you are consuming!

The problem with consuming too much sugar is that it stops you from burning fat and it causes weight gain and fatigue. Consume too much sugar, and your body will store it as FAT and store it in fat cells, leading to weight gain. So, next time you are at Starbucks contemplating what drink to order, take a minute and check their website, ask the barista about sugar content, or just go for a simpler option.

Some good options are:

- Plain coffee, no added flavors... these syrups are just pure sugar!

- Full Fat Latte, no added flavors

- Full fat plain cappuccino, no added flavors

- Americano, with no added flavor

- Caffee Misto

- Flat White

- Want a cold drink for a hot summer day? Try their unsweetened Iced Americano, iced latte or even iced tea... Add cold full fat milk, raw honey or stevia and a dash of cinnamon. This may not be as good as the real deal but it’s not gonna cost you that muffin top either!
